How to Maintain a Wooden Chopping Board

A well-loved wooden chopping board needs a little care to keep it clean, protected and looking its best. This simple salt, lemon and mineral oil method helps remove odours, lift stains and condition the wood so it lasts longer.

Items You’ll Need

Salt
1 lemon, halved
Warm soapy water
Food-grade mineral oil

METHOD

1. Sprinkle with salt

Generously sprinkle salt over the surface of the chopping board.

2. Scrub with lemon

Squeeze the juice from half a lemon over the salt. Use the other lemon half to scrub the board thoroughly for a few minutes. This helps lift stains and remove lingering odours.

3. Rinse and dry

Rinse the board with warm soapy water to remove the salt and lemon residue. Dry it completely before oiling.

4. Apply mineral oil

Pour food-grade mineral oil onto the dry board. Spread it evenly over the surface using your hands, making sure the whole board is coated. Add a little extra to the centre of the board, where wear and tear is usually greatest.

5. Let it absorb overnight

Stand the chopping board on its side and leave it overnight so the wood can fully absorb the oil.

6. Wipe and use

The next day, wipe off any excess oil with a clean cloth. Your chopping board is now refreshed, protected and ready to use again.

Care Tip

Oil your wooden chopping board once a month, or whenever the wood starts to look dry. Always dry it thoroughly after washing and avoid soaking it in water or putting it in the dishwasher.
